Experience the spectacular coastal road R44 – the most beautiful scenic drive at the Cape

Dramatic cliffs, pounding surf and a road that winds along the rocky coastline like a snake – the R44 is one of South Africa’s most impressive scenic routes. It runs between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmond and offers you a drive with unforgettable views of the Atlantic, the mountains and secluded bays. At times it runs close to the water’s edge, at others it climbs steeply and opens up sweeping views of the endless ocean.

The road is perfect for a relaxed road trip with plenty of stops. Parking bays along the way invite you to get out, soak up the views or watch the waves crashing against the rocks. Keep an eye out for seals basking on the rocks or – with a bit of luck – for whales passing along the coast between June and November.

Plan plenty of time, because this route is not just a connection between two places but an experience in its own right. Combine it with a stopover in one of the hidden bays or treat yourself to a freshly brewed coffee at one of the mobile coffee vans along the route. It’s best to drive in the morning or afternoon when the light bathes the coastline in a golden glow.
