Watch Grizzly bears up close from the Belarko Wildlife Viewing Platform

The Belarko Wildlife Viewing Platform in Bella Coola is one of the few places in Canada where you can safely watch Grizzly bears in their natural habitat. During the salmon run from late August to early October the bears gather on the Atnarko River to build up their fat reserves for the winter. Imagine these powerful animals appearing on the riverbank just a few metres away to catch fresh salmon – a magical encounter that connects you with the wilderness of Canada.

From the platform, which is surrounded by a protective electric fence, you can observe Grizzlies from very close range. Rangers and Qw’litqana (employees of the Nuxalk Nation) ensure everything runs smoothly. Information boards on site explain the bears’ behaviour and the cultural significance of the animals for the Indigenous population.

The platform is located about 45 minutes east of Bella Coola and is only open in September. Entry is free, but visitor numbers are controlled – so it is worth arriving early. Plan your visit carefully and check the current conditions in advance. You should definitely bring binoculars or a telephoto lens. Important to know: the number of Grizzlies in this region fluctuates from year to year depending on salmon stocks. Your best chances of seeing a Grizzly are in the early morning and in the evening.
