Hike to Svartifoss, the waterfall with basalt columns

Svartifoss in Vatnajökull National Park in south Iceland is famous for its impressive black basalt columns, which create a distinctive backdrop for the roughly 20 metre high waterfall. The waterfall is fed by the river Stórilækur and its surroundings are characterised by rich vegetation that reflects Iceland’s harsh climate. These unique basalt formations are the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity that has shaped the region.

To reach Svartifoss, you start at the visitor centre in Skaftafell. A well-marked hiking trail leads to the waterfall and back in about an hour. The path is moderately difficult to steep in some sections, but offers regular places to rest. To choose the right path, keep to the left of the visitor centre. The hike rewards you with further natural wonders such as the waterfalls Hundafoss and Magnusarfoss. The car park at the trailhead is subject to a fee but offers direct access to this natural experience.
