Walk along the Cliff Path and watch out for whales

Hermanus is considered one of the best places in the world to watch whales directly from the mainland – and the Cliff Path is your companion on this exceptional walk. The coastal path, around 12 kilometres long, runs between the New Harbour and Grotto Beach and can be walked in sections as short or as long as you like. The best thing: you don’t need a boat – just patience, open eyes and the right moment. The path is continuously paved or tarmacked, ideal for leisurely strolls – with no tripping hazards, but plenty of views.

Between June and November, southern right whales and humpback whales gather off the coast. From the path you look out over rocks, kelp forests and the wide Walker Bay. Again and again, benches, viewpoints and small bays invite you to pause. On the way you can take a break at Fick’s Pool, eat right by the coast – with a view of the sea. If you hear the sound of a horn: that’s the famous Whale Crier, who alerts everyone to current sightings.

The Cliff Path is easy to walk, well signposted and perfect for experiencing nature at your own pace – whether for 20 minutes or a whole day.
