Venture into blue passages and ice caves at Katla volcano

In a specially equipped super jeep you drive along unpaved F-roads to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, beneath which lies the active volcano Katla. The drive takes you through rough highland terrain that you cannot reach with normal vehicles. Once you arrive at the glacier, the short hike to the ice cave begins, which is unique for its black ash layers in the ice. These discolourations are created by volcanic activity and form a striking contrast to the clear blue of the glacial ice. Inside the cave you can see how the ice is constantly changing through movement and meltwater, reshaped anew each time.

The guided half-day tour lasts about 3 to 4 hours and starts in Vík í Mýrdal. You are given a helmet and crampons on site for exploring the cave. The tour can be booked all year round and is run in small groups. A certain level of physical fitness is required, as the hike to the cave leads over wobbly planks and uneven paths. Access to the cave is only allowed with a guide, as the region is under continuous geological monitoring.
