Feel the magic as green lights dance in the sky above Kirkjufell

From Kirkjufellsfoss you experience one of Iceland's most spectacular settings for watching the northern lights. The aurora borealis dances on clear nights above the 463 metre high Kirkjufell, whose distinctive conical shape rises directly behind the three-tiered waterfall. The interplay of green glowing northern lights, flowing water and the iconic mountain silhouette offers photographers exceptional conditions. The remote location near Grundarfjörður keeps light pollution to a minimum, and the aurora season runs from the end of August to mid April.

The spot is only a few minutes' drive from the town of Grundarfjörður and is reached via a short path from the car park. Parking is available right on site. Access is possible all year round, with the winter months being particularly interesting for northern lights hunters. Due to its growing fame as a photo location, there can be several visitors at the same time, especially in good weather and when aurora activity is high. A tripod and warm clothing are recommended if you are staying out for longer periods at night.
