Climb the towering sand mountains of Big Daddy dune

The Big Daddy dune rises impressively from the desert landscape of Sossusvlei. At around 325 metres high it is one of the tallest sand dunes in the world – and definitely the highest in Sossusvlei. Located right next to Deadvlei, it offers you a breathtaking view from the summit over the white salt pan and the surrounding deep-red dunes. The sheer size and the colour contrasts of the landscape make this climb an incomparable experience.

The ascent to the top is physically demanding, as the sand gives way with every step. But the reward is unrivalled: from the highest point, the Namib Desert stretches out like an endless sea of sand mountains, while the silhouettes of the dead camelthorn trees down in Deadvlei create an otherworldly sight. Early in the morning, when the sun bathes the dunes in golden light, the view is especially magical.

After the strenuous climb comes the fun descent: you can run down the steep dune into Deadvlei and almost glide through the soft sand. To avoid the heat you should set off early and take plenty of water with you.
