Paddle deep into the quiet gorge of the Knysna River

The Knysna River reveals a quiet side of the Garden Route – far from harbour and lagoon this guided kayak tour takes you upstream into a sheltered river gorge. You glide silently through the water as the riverbanks slowly change: dense forest, mossy ground, ancient giant trees closing their canopy above you.

With a bit of luck you’ll spot vervet monkeys on the bank, mongooses scurrying through the undergrowth or a shy bushbuck pausing briefly before disappearing into the thicket. Knysna turacos, kingfishers, African fish eagles or great cormorants also put in an occasional appearance – usually only once you sharpen your gaze and slow your pace. The river cuts deep into the ancient forests – and from the water you gain a rare insight into the canopy.
