Take a trip to a secluded island in the Okavango Delta

Explore remote Marula Island, located deep in the Okavango Delta. For adventurous self-drivers this island offers a unique opportunity to venture further into the delta and experience untouched wilderness.

Marula Island lies in the north between Third Bridge and Xakanaxa and is only accessible via Dead Tree Island. This means that the route there is only possible when water levels are low. The drive to Marula Island is a real adventure that takes you along various water channels and past impressive landscapes.

The track on Marula Island winds in several loops across the island and passes several pans. If you arrive late in the morning or in the afternoon, impalas and wildebeest stand in the shade of the trees. Most animals such as giraffes, elephants, lechwe and zebras gather on the western side of the island. There is also a resident pride of lions that you may be able to observe if you are lucky.

Plan 2–3 hours for your drive from Dead Tree Island to Marula Island and on to Xakanaxa. Be aware of the water levels and check whether the tracks are passable before you set off.
