Experience the orange lighthouse above the black cliffs

Svörtuloft Lighthouse is a bright orange tower on the black lava rocks at the westernmost point of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The 12 metre high tower from 1931 stands out strikingly against the dark cliffs and the North Atlantic. The surroundings are characterised by dramatic rock formations and a wild, rugged coastline. In clear weather the view stretches far out over the sea, while in summer gulls and guillemots nest in the cliffs. The contrast between the orange lighthouse and the black lava coast is especially impressive at sunset.

The roughly 5 km long access road is an unpaved gravel road with numerous potholes and deep ruts. The drive takes around 15 minutes and requires slow driving. The small car park has space for about 4 vehicles and is often full at weekends. The lighthouse itself is not accessible, but you can explore the surrounding area on foot. A viewing platform nearby offers an unobstructed view over the Atlantic. The site lies in Snæfellsjökull National Park and is ideal for a short stop with an intense nature experience.
