The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world – right after the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Fish River Canyon is a true natural wonder that will impress you with its gigantic dimensions of 160 kilometres in length, up to 27 kilometres in width and a depth of up to 549 metres.

This natural wonder was carved into the plateau by the Fish River over thousands of years and now offers a breathtaking landscape for you to explore. Your adventure begins in Hobas, the park entrance to the /Ai-/Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, where the Fish River Canyon and its spectacular viewpoints are located.

The viewpoints of the Fish River Canyon

• Main Viewpoint: This viewpoint is easy to reach by car. From here you can drive along the canyon rim both north and south. The Main Viewpoint offers a view of a horseshoe-shaped loop of the canyon. There are also covered viewpoints with tables, benches and toilets – ideal for a first look at the canyon.
• Sunset Viewpoint: Particularly recommended in the evening. Sunset Viewpoint is ideal for watching the breathtaking sunset over the canyon. For an unforgettable experience, a path leads you even closer to the edge of the canyon.
• Hangpoint Lookout: Another impressive viewpoint that offers you a unique view across the canyon.
• Hiker’s Viewpoint: The northernmost viewpoint of the canyon. After about two minutes you reach a viewpoint from the car park which also has a small picnic area. This is also where the 5-day hike through the canyon begins.
