Climb Lion’s Head

Whether in the first light of day or for a golden finale – the view from Lion’s Head lets you see Cape Town with new eyes. The Atlantic Ocean gleams far below, Table Mountain watches in the background while city lights glow or slowly fade. This play of colours between sky and earth makes the summit a very special place.

The hike takes about an hour and leads along narrow paths, zigzags and a short scrambling section with ladders and chains. If you want to experience the sunrise, set off in the dark – your reward will be a moment that stays with you. For sunset, you hike up in daylight and descend with a head torch. Both options offer intense nature experiences and magnificent views.

Start about two hours before sunrise or sunset so you can reach the top without rushing. A head torch is an absolute must in your pack. If you don’t feel comfortable hiking in the dark in Cape Town, you can join a guided group – that way you won’t be on your own and can fully focus on the moment. For sunset, Uber is ideal, as parking spaces are scarce and the roads are often congested.
