Relax in natural pools right by the Atlantic

Hvammsvík Hot Springs are in a quiet bay in Hvalfjörður, about 45 minutes by car from Reykjavík. Eight natural thermal pools of different sizes and temperatures lie side by side right on the coast, surrounded by rocks and the untouched fjord landscape of west Iceland. The geothermal water from a nearby spring is mixed with seawater, so depending on the pool and the tides, the water temperature ranges from around 10 °C to 42 °C. At high tide some pools are partially flooded with Atlantic water, making your visit a dynamic experience. The mix of freshwater and salty seawater is unique in Iceland.

You can only visit with an advance online reservation, to limit visitor numbers and maintain a peaceful atmosphere. Access is via a well-developed road along Hvalfjörður, and parking is free. On site you’ll find changing rooms, showers and a bar and bistro. It’s suitable both for a relaxed stopover on a round trip and for a longer stay; especially in the morning it’s not very busy. Hvammsvík follows a nature-focused approach without mass tourism.
